Koto Bat

#4

BYD is the clear volume leader: 2.5M+ sales put it first in the set, while +27.9% YoY growth takes it to third for momentum. But its 5th-place Koto brand ranking tells a different story. The business has achieved extraordinary scale. The brand still has room to catch up.

If we were BYD, we’d focus on identity and storytelling. Its industrial credentials are formidable: vertical integration, battery technology and cost efficiency have given it a strong foundation and fuelled growth across markets. As BYD pushes further into the West, the opportunity is to build a brand with the same clarity and confidence as the business behind it.

And there’s plenty to work with. ‘Build Your Dreams’ feels optimistic and refreshingly human in a category that can skew clinical. Names like Dolphin and Sealion – whilst not for everybody – bring a little more personality to a world of numbers, letters and increasingly interchangeable model names.

The ingredients are there. The opportunity is to turn them into something unmistakably BYD, across product, retail, communications and experience.

Provocations

  • How far could ‘Build Your Dreams’ go as a brand idea, rather than simply a name?

  • Could BYD lean further into its more playful side, and make personality a point of difference?

  • What would it take for the BYD brand to become as powerful as the business behind it?
