A steady mid-table performer commercially, less so on identity: 5th for sales volume (269,169), 4th for business momentum (+17% YoY), but 9th in the Koto brand ranking. Hyundai's sales and growth are consistent and unremarkable in the best sense, reliable, proven demand, but the brand strength lags behind the commercial performance, the widest gap of any brand so far positioned mid-table on sales.
Our focus, if we were Hyundai, would be closing the gap between the successful Ioniq and Santa Fe products, and the wider brand and marketing. Here, Hyundai has real assets to draw on, the Ioniq sub-brand has a distinct design and visual language. Hyundai has more-or-less achieved the difficult challenge of moving up-market with these models and the brand has been an early, credible mover in EV specifically. But "Hyundai" as a master brand still reads as a broad, functional automotive name – one that can only get stronger with a focus on distinction and articulation of a clear point of view.
"Progress for Humanity" as a positioning is ambitious and values-led, but at this level of abstraction it's a claim almost any brand in the category could make, the risk is the directionless trap this report warns about elsewhere.
